VFW: Boisterous building! | News, Sports, Jobs - Lehigh Acres Citizen

If you haven’t been to Lehigh Acres lately, you are probably unaware that around every corner, in every neighborhood, there is a boisterous building bonanza taking place! Not only are many houses rising, there are stores moving in or expanding, restaurants popping up, more schools, and even more parks.

While this is all very new and exciting, it makes one wonder; “Why aren’t we building better connections with our neighbors? “ Welcoming and appreciating those around us should be even more important than the color paving on a driveway, or the installation of a mermaid by one’s pool. Even the planting of an exotic tree, putting up a decorative fence, and adding a rose garden, while certainly appealing, definitely should take a back seat to being a helpful, friendly member of a neighborhood.

Here at the Lehigh Acres VFW, Post 4174, we believe in doing our building from within our hearts and minds. Our habits stem from the military, where it was drilled into each person that your companions are your best friends and you are his or hers. Those in your unit had your back and the bonds that unite military personnel are stronger than any concrete mixture yet devised.

The VFW continually strives to build better relations with our government each and every day. We are always at the capitol raising issues that demand better care and benefits for those who served the country. Veterans should not have to resort to fighting in Washington D.C. for rights, benefits, fair housing and consideration for the family.

To help the VFW build better relations for all Veterans, each of us should become a “contractor” of consideration, courtesy to others and a helping hand, regardless of race or creed. We could work together to “cement” a strong foundation for a world with less hatred, misunderstandings, and an appreciation for future generations.

This is one of our many goals, and we gladly invite the public to join us at any time. If there are any questions about any of our activities, a call to 239-369-5100 will give an answer. Pick up the phone and give us a call. You will be glad you did!

The Sons of the American Legion Squadron 323 will put on an event, Saturday, Sept. 3, to support the USA ...
